The fourth Just Transition Platform Meeting was opened by Marc Lemaître, Director-General for Regional and Urban Policy. After an address by Kadri Simson, Commissioner for Energy, Marc Lemaître looked back on developments since the previous JTP meeting in April. He referred to Europe’s commitment to become climate neutral by 2050 and reduce carbon emissions by 55% by 2030, and the establishment of all legal elements of the Just Transition Mechanism, which will provide at least €55 billion of targeted support to Europe’s most affected regions. On behalf of Elisa Ferreira, European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Lemaître highlighted the importance of setting up comprehensive, strategic Territorial Just Transition Plans (TJTPs) that identify clear impacts, challenges, actions and trajectories. He also shared Ferreira’s message that ‘we have all to gain by getting ahead with change’ and re-emphasised the need for an inclusive and participatory transition, involving regions and people – particularly younger citizens.
