63 % of European Union citizens would like to use a secure single digital ID for both private and public services. The progress on national digital IDs has been unequal throughout the EU, but companies, banks and online platforms already provide users with digital identity services. However, some people are concerned about personal data collection and cybersecurity in existing digital wallets. The European Commission proposed to update the framework for a European Digital Identity. The creation of European digital identity wallets is a central part of this update. If the proposal is adopted, everyone in the EU could prove their identity and share electronic documents from their European digital identity wallets, in their home country as well as in the rest of the EU.
